This year’s workshop on artificial intelligence and its applications in heritage conservation focuses on the practical uses of AI for the preservation of cultural heritage, as well as on the associated risks and issues of responsibility. Co-organisers are: msg Systems AG, the Association of State Heritage Authorities (AG Denkmalinformationssysteme), Blue Shield Germany, Fraunhofer FIT, HTWK Leipzig, ETH Zurich and TH Köln.
ICOMOS.DE, as the national institution for heritage protection and conservation, has been addressing issues surrounding the use of AI in cultural heritage conservation for three years now. In administration and heritage conservation practice, artificial intelligence is by no means a new development; rather, it has now found its way into the professional practice of those working in the field of cultural heritage conservation. At this year’s European Heritage Fair in Leipzig, the AI workshop will, for example, showcase the use of AI in heritage monitoring, restoration practices and heritage communication. The workshop will be accompanied by a poster exhibition and an on-site hands-on workshop (see below).
msg Workshop: The Future of Heritage Protection and Conservation in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is set to bring about lasting changes to the world of work in the coming years. But what specific implications will this have for the fields of heritage protection and conservation?
In this interactive workshop, we will explore the four key themes of ‘Working with AI tools’, ‘AI & work culture’, ‘AI & data usage’ and ‘AI in leadership & management’, and discuss their significance for the future of heritage conservation and preservation. In doing so, we will deliberately contrast today’s experiences, successes and insights with a vision of the future, and together develop visions, opportunities, challenges and possible scenarios for change.
A keynote presentation on current AI technologies in public administration, along with insights into the KIbarDok AI project run by Berlin’s Supreme Authority for the Protection of Historical Monuments, will provide the framework for an inspiring exchange and the joint development of a vision for the future of digital heritage management.
