Surface design – Applying historical rendering techniques using modern methods

Short description

Bringing historical plastering techniques into the modern day: Dr Klaus Hoffmann presents drag plaster, classic trowel finish, comb finish and bossed plaster. Using clear examples, he demonstrates how materials, tools and craftsmanship shape the characteristic appearance of the surfaces.

Description

Historic plaster finishes lend buildings their distinctive character. Recreating them requires an understanding of materials, tools and traditional craftsmanship. Dr Klaus Hoffmann demonstrates how classic finishes can be achieved using modern methods. The focus is on drag-finish plaster, classic trowel-thrown plaster, comb-textured plaster and relief plaster.

Using clear practical examples, the lecture explains the individual steps involved and the influence of grain size, application thickness and mortar consistency. In doing so, it highlights the distinctive features of each technique: the grain composition in drag-finish plaster, the precise application of mortar in trowel-thrown plaster, the tool-defined texture of comb-drawn plaster and the formation of stone-like patterns in bossed plaster.

The lecture provides practical insights into material selection and application. It combines traditional craftsmanship with modern possibilities for surface design and offers inspiration for the creation of classic plaster finishes.
