Building Research 2go: mystery – what’s that shoe doing in the wall?

9:30 AM - 10:30 AM Fri, 06 Nov

Short description

The discovery of shoes in historic buildings is a specialist area of historical building research that is still relatively little known. Reason enough to start a discussion on the subject.

Description

Time and again, during the restoration of historic buildings, shoes are discovered that were walled into the building’s walls centuries ago. These finds usually end up in the site skip – simply out of ignorance. Are these shoe finds merely a mystery, or do they bear witness to traditional customs? What insights does historical building research provide? And how do heritage conservation authorities deal with them?
