Gold for Preserving Heritage! Leipzig Fair Honors Outstanding Achievements in Conservation
The Gold Medals of denkmal are recognized throughout Europe as a hallmark of excellence in heritage preservation. For 30 years, this prestigious award has been presented by denkmal – the leading European trade fair for conservation, restoration, and old building renovation. On November 6 2026, five denkmal exhibitors will have the opportunity to receive a Gold Medal. Exhibitors are now invited to submit their projects, products, and innovations for consideration.
Since their introduction in 1996, the Gold Medals have found a place in workshops, offices, and foyers of companies, craft enterprises, educational institutions, organizations, and initiatives across Europe. The awards will once again be presented in November 2026. Markus Geisenberger, CEO of Leipzig Fair, explains why outstanding achievements in European heritage preservation deserve this distinction: "Preserving cultural heritage for future generations, passing on the skills and expertise required for its conservation, and fostering continued commitment to heritage preservation are all essential elements of our society. For this reason, Leipzig Fair honors outstanding contributors to heritage conservation every two years with the Gold Medal." Alongside the preservation of historic fabric, the sustainable use of existing buildings has become increasingly important. The refurbishment and continued use of existing structures is widely regarded as a resource-efficient alternative to new construction and has long been a defining principle of heritage conservation.

Who Decides – and When?
All exhibitors at denkmal are invited to submit their projects or products by 15 September 2026 and actively apply for the Gold Medal. The nominees will be announced in early October. Who Produces the Gold Medals?
The Gold Medals are minted in the town of Braunsbedra in Saxony-Anhalt by the Gallas family business. After leaving the minting press of Siegfried Gallas and his son Christoph, the medals make one last stop in Leipzig before arriving at trade fair. There, at “Graveur am Schillerhaus”, they receive their finishing touches and are individually engraved in preparation for the award ceremony.
