It is crucial not only to use light functionally, but also to consider it as an integral part of the architecture. At stglicht, we see ourselves as an extra resource for architects, planners and artists and support them in designing suitable luminaires. This magnificent pendant luminaire for the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem was carefully welded and gilded by hand by master craftsmen. Our task was to integrate the lighting into this ring without detracting from the overall appearance of this work of art. To achieve this, we designed 12 light-inserts and installed them in the almost 6-meter-wide ring. Each insert contains a downlight for task lighting and an uplight to brighten up the painted ceiling. The light sources are RGBW controllable in order to select the perfect light color for each event. This project shows how historical spaces can be given even more significance through thoughtful lighting.
