Hemp as an Organic Raw Material
A product of: Hochschule Merseburg

For a long time, hemp, a sustainable organic raw material, was displaced by fossil-based raw materials. However, its reintroduction offers new opportunities for sustainable construction, regional value creation, and the economically efficient production of building materials and fiber products.

The research group "Bio-Rohstoffe" at Merseburg University of Applied Sciences is investigating the potential of industrial hemp in three areas:

  • Economy: How can regional value chains be established that fully harness the potential of industrial hemp?
  • Acceptance: How can the image of industrial hemp in society be improved?
  • Materials: What innovative building materials and novel food and cosmetic products can be developed using industrial hemp?
  • The research group provides insights into its work and presents findings and products. It also provides information about the newly established "Informations- und Kompetenzzentrum Hanf mit Erlebnispfaden" in Mücheln, which brings the research findings to life.

The project is funded by the European Union (JTF).
