Protection of Cultural Heritage in Times of Conflict

3:30 PM - 4:00 PM Fri 08. Nov

Short description

In 2024, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Hague Convention and at the same time the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Second Protocol to this convention.

Description

The 1954 Hague Convention, adopted under the auspices of UNESCO, was the first international legal framework entirely devoted to the protection of movable and immovable cultural heritage and established, for the very first time, a clear and shared global legal framework to ensure that cultural property would be protected from combat operations and that those responsible for deliberate destruction of such property would be brought to justice. These legal instruments have not only strengthened international law and established a permanent forum for dialogue between cultural professionals and military authorities, but they have also, importantly, given rise to very tangible and practical preventive measures which should be implemented during peacetime by States Parties in all regions of the world.
