Article for the Tacheles Year: Leipzig’s ‘Notenbogen’ and sites of Jewish remembrance

10:00 AM - 10:45 AM Sat, 07 Nov

Short description

The lecture ‘A Contribution to the Tacheles Year: Leipzig’s Musical Heritage & Sites of Jewish Remembrance’ focuses on Leipzig’s largely forgotten Jewish musical heritage and its significance for the city’s cultural identity. Drawing on the ‘Jüdische Notenspuren’ project by Leipziger Notenspur, the lecture presents historical sites and buildings that bear witness to German-Jewish musical and cultural history. The lecture demonstrates how music and the connection to historical sites can help to bring this heritage back into the city’s collective memory. At the same time, it focuses on a vibrant culture of remembrance that encourages active engagement with issues of exclusion and persecution, and highlights the importance of solidarity, compassion and humanity for our present day.
