The lecture uses the conservation of Kaufbeuren’s town wall and hemp-lime insulation to demonstrate how lime binders can be used both in heritage conservation and in sustainable construction. Historically inspired lime mortars are designed to be more compatible with old masonry than modern cement mortars, while hemp-lime provides a vapour-permeable solution that regulates moisture and supports a healthy indoor climate. Both examples highlight the versatility and sustainability of lime as a building material.
