Documentation in heritage preservation: what is happening at the fokus GmbH joint stand?
fokus GmbH Leipzig has been a long-standing partner of denkmal. For this year’s edition, the company has once again organised a joint stand, where 18 exhibitors will present their products and services and one educational institution will present its training and continuing-education programmes in heritage documentation. In this guest contribution, the company offers a brief overview of the participating businesses and educational providers and their expertise.
High-quality heritage documentation depends on the successful interplay of experienced specialists, appropriate capture technology and suitable processing methods. These include photogrammetry and 3D laser scanning, virtual reality, 2D and 3D digitisation, evaluation software, imaging and lighting technology, and surveying technology.
CDS Gromke handles complex digitisation projects for the indexing and safeguarding of collection and archive holdings. The company also supports clients in setting up digital asset management solutions and connecting them to existing systems.
Hedler Systemtechnik, Novoflex and Optolux shine a light on the focus area of camera, lighting and system technology. Dr. Clauß Bild- und Datentechnik GmbH develops and manufactures camera and scanning technology for 2D and 3D digitisation, meeting the highest requirements for image quality, precision and efficiency in the digitisation of cultural assets. With its GFX camera system, FUJIFILM presents a digital medium-format system for reproduction, documentation and digitisation at the highest quality level.
Scan3D GmbH, Lupos3D and fokus GmbH Leipzig are specialists in “3D architectural surveying”. Scan3D GmbH has many years of project experience in applying 3D scanning technology to 3D object surveying, including architectural surveys, deformation analysis, and the recording and modelling of components in power-plant and shipbuilding contexts. With its LupoScan software, Lupos3D offers a specialised solution for evaluating 3D laser-scan data. fokus GmbH Leipzig has extensive experience in true-to-form measured surveys and photogrammetric documentation in heritage preservation. In restoration documentation in particular, it produces digital image plans – rectified images, unfolded views and orthoprojections – with high photographic quality. FARO® INSIGHT, a business of AMETEK®, Inc., is again represented at the stand as an experienced laser-scanning manufacturer. With FARO® Focus, it presents a comprehensive solution for capturing precise digital 3D models, speeding up data exchange and improving on-site efficiency.
Precise planning is, of course, also part of heritage documentation. Restauratorische Bauplanung Jens Kaminsky supports the implementation of workflows and preliminary investigations, restoration planning and tendering, as well as construction supervision and billing. It uses metigo® MAP, the mapping software developed by fokus GmbH Leipzig. The tubag specialists at Sievert Baustoffe SE & Co. KG support renovation and restoration projects involving historic building fabric comprehensively, from preliminary investigations and object analysis through object-specific formulation to assistance in preparing specifications. New to the stand is AriInfoWare GmbH with MonArch, its archive software for digital building management. Developed at the University of Passau for more than 20 years and continued by AriInfoWare GmbH since 2021, the system consolidates all relevant information in a central archive that remains permanently accessible – for historic monuments as well as modern building projects.
Gießerei Kessler offers a complete workflow from digitisation and reverse engineering to 3D model printing and the casting of a wide range of components. This enables the company to manufacture complex cast parts in almost any geometry. Its material range extends from unalloyed cast iron and highly alloyed stainless steels to bronze casting and special alloys for heritage-preservation requirements.
Aurich und Hallbauer GmbH is a knowledgeable contact for surveying technology and thermal-imaging cameras. It equips construction companies with measuring technology and software solutions and supports them in mastering surveying tasks through training and hands-on instruction.
As an IT systems provider, Hansa Computer supports you in establishing a smooth workflow between hardware and software components, including procurement of hardware for mobile 2D and 3D mapping on site.
At the European Training Centre for the Stonemasonry and Stone Sculpture Trades, Steinzentrum Wunsiedel offers specialised initial and continuing training for stone professionals. Stonemasons and stone sculptors can complete training as a Restaurator im Handwerk (Master Professional) at the EFBZ or, as an entry point to restoration, take the journeyman’s course in heritage preservation. The EFBZ combines traditional craftsmanship with the latest conservation techniques and places great emphasis on the highest quality standards and practice-based training.
Romoe, the international information and industry network for restoration, conservation, crafts, heritage preservation and monument protection, is at the stand for the first time. The platform connects specialists, businesses, museums, educational institutions, organisations and manufacturers.
The stand will also present a virtual walk-through of 3D object documentation as a digital twin using VR headsets in metigo® MAP. Project examples – from measured surveys and 3D laser scanning to wall-painting documentation and 3D mapping projects – will provide the basis for a new discussion about how existing documentation data can be used in the future.
