Solidarity in heritage. Strategy for nomination goals in Poland.

12:15 PM - 12:35 PM Fri, 06 Nov

Description

Cultural heritage transcends national borders, reflecting centuries of shared histories, cultural exchange and diverse identities. In this context, solidarity emerges as an essential principle of heritage protection, grounded in mutual recognition, shared responsibility and international cooperation.

This presentation explores how these principles inform Poland’s approach to cultural heritage protection and UNESCO World Heritage nominations. Particular attention is given to the preservation of multicultural heritage, including the legacy of national, ethnic and religious minorities, as well as places associated with complex and sometimes contested historical narratives.

Drawing on Poland’s experience in developing transnational nomination initiatives, the presentation examines how international cooperation can foster a deeper understanding of shared heritage values and strengthen long-term partnerships.

Moving beyond the nomination process itself, the presentation considers how solidarity can contribute to a more inclusive and strategically oriented approach to heritage policy, one that recognises cultural diversity, encourages dialogue and places shared responsibility at the heart of heritage preservation.

Ultimately, protecting shared heritage means taking collective responsibility for its future.
