Clay-based construction techniques and products for the restoration of half-timbered buildings

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM Fri, 06 Nov

Short description

Clay, a traditional building material in half-timbered construction, was valued for its regional availability and ease of use. Today, the focus is on its technical significance in combination with load-bearing timber beams to ensure the longevity of half-timbered houses. ClayTec popularised clay in the 1980s and has extensive experience in renovation. The presentation will cover half-timbered walls, ceilings, infill, external render, internal insulation and finishes.

Description

Clay has been used in half-timbered construction for centuries. In the past, its regional availability and ease of use were key factors. Today, we recognise the material’s particular technical and structural significance when used in conjunction with load-bearing timber beams, thanks to which half-timbered houses have stood the test of time for centuries. In the 1980s, ClayTec reintroduced clay as a building material to a wider public and has decades of experience in the renovation of half-timbered houses. This talk provides an overview of half-timbered walls and ceilings, infill walls and external render, as well as internal insulation and finishes.
