Clay, a traditional building material in half-timbered construction, was valued for its regional availability and ease of use. Today, the focus is on its technical significance in combination with load-bearing timber beams to ensure the longevity of half-timbered houses. ClayTec popularised clay in the 1980s and has extensive experience in renovation. The presentation will cover half-timbered walls, ceilings, infill, external render, internal insulation and finishes.
Historic facades are important for the preservation of historic buildings and the cityscape. Internal insulation is a tried-and-tested and efficient solution for maintaining their quality whilst enabling energy efficiency improvements. The presentation covers the technical fundamentals, various ClayTec systems and their installation, as well as government funding opportunities for internal insulation measures.
The hot summer of 2026 highlights the importance of sustainable building methods. Underfloor heating systems are more efficient than traditional systems, as they operate at lower temperatures, utilise renewable energy sources and can also be used for cooling in summer. Passive thermal mass helps to delay the release of heat during the day. Clay-based building products are particularly suitable due to their thermal conductivity. The lecture covers various heating and cooling systems made from clay building materials and their thermally effective components.

Wood is an essential building material for circular construction; however, its environmental benefits are often compromised by non-circular construction techniques. The development of alternative dry-construction methods poses a particular challenge in the field of fire safety. This presentation examines current practices and the potential of combining wood and clay to improve fire safety.
