Surface heating and cooling systems using clay-based building products; low-tech solutions for heat protection

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM Sat, 07 Nov

Short description

The hot summer of 2026 highlights the importance of sustainable building methods. Underfloor heating systems are more efficient than traditional systems, as they operate at lower temperatures, utilise renewable energy sources and can also be used for cooling in summer. Passive thermal mass helps to delay the release of heat during the day. Clay-based building products are particularly suitable due to their thermal conductivity. The lecture covers various heating and cooling systems made from clay building materials and their thermally effective components.

Description

The scorching summer of 2026 and the focus on renewable energy sources are drawing attention to the thermal aspects of building. Thanks to their low system temperature, underfloor heating systems utilise renewable energy far more efficiently than conventional systems. In summer, these heating systems can be switched to active cooling. The use of passive thermal storage masses delays the transfer of heat into the building throughout the day, extending it into the cool evening hours. Clay building products are ideal system components for this purpose due to their high thermal conductivity and storage mass. The presentation will showcase various ClayTec wall and ceiling heating and cooling systems using clay building materials, as well as the potential applications of thermally effective clay components.
