Wood is an essential building material for circular construction; however, its environmental benefits are often compromised by non-circular construction techniques. The development of alternative dry-construction methods poses a particular challenge in the field of fire safety. This presentation examines current practices and the potential of combining wood and clay to improve fire safety.

Description

Wood is a key building material for the circular and low-emission construction of the future. However, the favourable environmental properties of timber structures are often undermined in practice by interior finishes that are only marginally circular. Given the often stringent fire safety requirements, developing alternatives to conventional drywall construction methods is a challenging task. By 2026, fire safety using clay will have taken significant strides forward. This relates both to simplified building control procedures and to the fire-retardant properties of new building materials and applications for multi-storey timber construction. The presentation will outline what is already standard practice today and the prospects that the combination of timber and clay offers for fire safety.
