The history of lithography is inseparably linked to SOLNHOFENER Natural Stone. When Alois Senefelder invented lithographic printing at the end of the 18th century, he discovered that the exceptionally fine-grained and homogeneous Solnhofen limestone was the ideal material for this revolutionary printing technique.
Today, SSG Solnhofen Stone Group is the last remaining manufacturer of original lithographic stones made from Solnhofen limestone. Production continues using traditional craftsmanship in the very same historic workshop that has been in operation for more than 100 years.
By preserving this rare craft, SSG also safeguards an important part of printing and cultural history. Original Solnhofen lithographic stones allow artists, printmaking workshops and conservators to continue practising the traditional art of stone lithography.
