Vita

Assoc. Prof. D.Sc., Ph.D. Kinga Racoń-Leja is an architect, urban designer, and Professor at the Cracow University of Technology. She heads the Chair of Urbanism and City Structure Architecture and specializes in urban transformation, climate adaptation, and urban heritage-related research. As university's team leader in the Horizon Europe FuturHist project, she investigates typology-based, climate-responsive and energy-efficient solutions for Kraków terraced tenement houses (kamienica), supporting their sustainable future while safeguarding cultural heritage values. Member of Małopolska Spatial Planning Commission, National Board of Polish Urban Planners Society TUP, Polish Architects Association SARP, Chamber of Architects MOIA.

Lecture

How can historic buildings be made energy-efficient for the future without compromising their cultural value?

The presentation examines the energy-efficient refurbishment of historic buildings without compromising their cultural value. The European research project FuturHist presents bespoke refurbishment solutions. The ICOMOS ISCES Knowledge Hub is presented as a platform for knowledge exchange. A sensitive approach to the energy-efficient refurbishment of 19th-century tenement blocks in Central Europe, exemplified by the demonstration building in Kraków, combines traditional construction methods with innovative solutions such as bio-based insulation materials, the refurbishment of historic windows, heat recovery systems, smart control technology and photovoltaics.
